For me at home, one way of presuming competence means reading, or listening to, books that are at grade level for my kids. That’s not to say we don’t still read the fan favorites on repeat, hello Goodnight Moon and Going on a Bear Hunt, please accidentally get lost Llama Llama. We started listening to Charlotte’s Web on Audible a few weeks ago and then Stuart Little. My husband was in the car during Stuart Little and we pulled over to get sandwiches and no one got out of the car because it was that good. We couldn’t stop listening.

I had planned to write a lesson for younger spellers just about Charlotte’s Web, but once I started learning about the life of E.B. White I just kept going. Something about him touched something deep inside of me. Maybe because he was so shy, or because he cancelled plans a lot and his friends knew that and didn’t mind and would usually just ask him to do something the day of. Maybe because he liked to drink a martini with his neighbors before dinner. Maybe because he lived in Maine, and that’s where my Mom is from, and something about it makes me want to go hide up there too.

The audiobook recordings are really good because they are actually read by the voice of E.B. White. I hope you enjoy this lesson as much as I enjoyed writing it.
